The year 2005 was one of mixed fortunes for Hunter and Michael but it set them up for different lives in 2006. Michael had been itching to do more theater work while Hunter was busy auditioning for role after role to no avail. She had also filmed an infomercial for Klear Action Teeth Whitening Light. That soon started airing and she was also still pursuing her public speaking work. This is where fate stepped in through a chance meeting in January with a previous employer. In February Michael performed in a play at the Nevada Conservatory in Las Vegas in mid February. The play was "A Man For All Seasons". He was still involved with his work at UNLV and there was some talk about work in a public relations consultancy as well.
During this time Hunter was on the path back to the international spotlight in her old Bold role. In 2004 she had met the show’s head honcho and they discussed the possibilities with her old character. The timing was not right for Hunter to go back to Bold then but the two crossed paths again in January of 2005 and the discussions were on once again. Hunter had found it difficult to secure regular acting work during the previous two years. The usual age discrimination would have played a part, no doubt, along with other factors.
Luckily for Hunter, her former employer, Bradley Bell is an extremely patient man and, despite previously bagging her previous departure from Bold, Hunter was welcomed back to the show in early March. Hunter’s return to Bold was only on a part-time basis for most of the year. She needed to spend time with her daughters and in addition, a family member had been in hospital and was recovering from an operation and Hunter wanted to be there to help. So Hunter commuted for three-and-a-half hours from her home in Las Vegas to her other home in Los Angeles two days a week. That left Thursday to Monday each week for other work as well as family life.
The nanny and Hunter’s eldest son, Christopher helped her with her daughters while she was away each day in LA. Katya had been learning Braille throughout 2004 and 2005 so on the days that Hunter was home she would spend some time helping her learn that while she is still young. That gave Christopher time to spend on obtaining his pilot’s license. While this was going on, Hunter’s return to Bold was supposedly surrounded in secrecy as the usual publicity spin had fans believe, not that it was not all untrue.
As the story goes, she had to wear a blonde wig to work and entered the studio through a secret tunnel. When required to be on the sound stage she was called by a fake name and only a few people knew of her return. Of course this whole covert operation was all conveniently leaked very quickly as a ratings stunt. It worked though because the show’s ratings increased when her first episode aired. From there on viewers were treated to a hypocritical character in ‘Taylor’ but later in the year she redeemed herself somewhat in a nice little twist.
Although she would not elaborate in magazine interviews, Hunter claimed that Taylor’s resurrection had a personal significance for her. This was probably due in part to her desire to see a dream fulfilled with her character – to bring out the hidden flaws in a previously angelic human being. That was soon accomplished leaving little else in the storyline for most of the year except for a few surprises here and there. Her return was something of a disaster therefore but by the year’s end she had taken on more work on the show and turned in some excellent performances as usual.
While all that was going on Michael had been involved in another play and several of Hunter’s movies were released. Michael was doing some acting work in a 15-week run in the Allentown Shakespeare Festival in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Over the years he has been a regular on the boards in Allentown. While Michael was involved in his play, Hunter’s movie, ‘Down and Derby’ (poster below) hit selected cities in April 2005. Unfortunately the movie was a complete flop and netted $204 000 in cinemas. Hunter’s other movie, ‘Hammerhead: Shark Frenzy’ (poster below) aired on June 18th on the Sci-Fi channel and was on DVD by October.
It was then that news filtered through to fans that Michael had apparently decided that he had had enough of his marriage to Hunter and he had taken off to parts unknown. Although a divorce was a long time coming, it provided fans with a bit of a shock at the time. Whether Hunter’s career was holding Michael back or not and whether or not the personal issues the two obviously had were that big will only be known by immediate family and a few outsiders who know minor parts of the story as well. So far they have kept everything very quiet but Michael has apparently cut his losses and run according to rumors.
There is one situation which may not have helped the marriage along and, to finish this look back at 2005, it is something we will take a look at now. The topic is Hunter’s plastic surgery and I, like other fans, rue the day that her first episode of Bold in 2005 saw her top lip swollen up considerably. Ever since then I have been annoyed by comments from Hunter’s critics in magazines and websites about this topic. Here is a photo from CBS that gave everyone a bit of a fright in April 2005 (not so much for the plastic surgery but the hair extensions). Before the plastic surgery is covered there is one topic leading up to that to cover first though.
When Hunter had previously left Bold she visited several Internet forums to - as she claimed in interviews in 2005 - help fans with their grief, which she said that she felt obligated to do. Of course no one actually expects celebrities to bother with their fans and most do not. She was quite funny at the time in some of her messages but it seemed that plenty of Bold fans wound up embarrassed for her in the end. So in 2005 she followed that up by "whingeing" in one soap magazine that when she did not return to the forums her fans complained.
Exactly how did she know that if she was not there? One of her people fills her in of course. She then went on to insult the intelligence of fans even more by saying that she thinks that fans think that celebrities owe it to them to be “a certain way” (ie: in appearance when out in public for example). Perhaps that would explain the plastic surgery. One magazine did an expose of what they think she had done as the photo below shows and they kept asking questions about her chest throughout 2005 (as another photo below shows).
Then AwfulPlasticSurgery.com did a feature in which Hunter starred. There were photos from years ago and photos from recent years. The site used the Emmys red carpet photo where her breasts were just about slapping her in the face (such as in the photo below). There was also a reader letter stating that Hunter looked like a freak. Obviously it would appear to some that, since around 1999, there has been some work on the lips (several times) and there may have been at least two chest uplifts, but who cares? It is disgusting that any young lady must "ruin" their look just to get a job in Hollywood. There is no question about the insidious nature of Hollywood and it is a shame. However, Hunter still has those stunning eyes and she still looks good.
I have never publicly expressed my opinion about Hunter’s plastic surgery. I will sort of “sit on the fence” with this topic. A part of me can see what everyone is talking about and I totally agree with her critics that her swollen top lip earlier in 2005 did look ridiculous. I will say that much. However, another part of me can see that Hunter has still got it going on, which is something I never thought I would say because I just see her as a beautiful lady and that is it. I am a guy though so I can see a sexy side to her like anyone else can. I like this photo of her below for example, just because she looks cool and probably a little sexy I might admit. Where her lips are concerned, I found myself being the target of criticism in 2005 as I will discuss next. That is why I rue the day she messed around with her lips but apart from that I have no other opinion about this topic.
Throughout 2005 I found myself trying to steer people away from the discussion here on HunterNet in the chat area where Hunter’s lips were the hot topic. There were people calling her a “plastic skank” and a “plastic ho” and some were urging her to go back to the way she was believe it or not. This os, of course, as if any of that makes a difference because what is done is done. One cannot click their fingers and hope that things return to the way they were before. In this site’s chat area I urged people to drop the subject because it was becoming boring.
I also said, in reference to Hunter’s co-star on Bold, that, “KKL is apparently anorexic and her hubby is such a control freak according to tabloids. That's more worrying.” I said that after various reports had surfaced about her now defunct movie career and these stories included photos stating that Katherine Kelly Lang (KKL) looked “thin and haggard”. Naturally this story annoyed the fans of KKL’s character Brooke, collectively known as “Brookies” and not surprisingly some of them did what they always do – turn on Hunter out of jealousy. And boy did I cop it for what I said as a result.
For more than eight months there were criticisms in magazines in nearly every reader letter and plenty of posts in the chat area here on HunterNet. It really did start to sound like a broken record when all people were saying was the exact same thing. I wanted it to stop and made it clear here that I wanted magazines to stop publishing boring reader letters that were just criticizing Hunter’s lips in every single issue in 2005. Hunter herself had to send out some spin (during magazine interviews) that might have had some people believing that she has always had big lips.
Of course photos and her old movies show differently and in one Australian television magazine I recall Hunter’s costar on Bold, Ronn Moss joking that while the character, Taylor was away she had a makeover. Subtle hints like that in response to questions about Hunter’s different look (her hair and lips) just go some way toward proving that she has had some work done as everyone saw in her first episode for 2005. Nevertheless I was bored with the topic and here on HunterNet I asked recalcitrant message posters to respect the rules that I laid out or go away.
These days I just delete the messages (even though I hate censorship) or I use their IP address to either embarrass them publicly or ask their ISP to shut their account for breach of terms of use. If they emailed photos of themselves to publish here for everyone else to judge then I might have been a bit more accepting of their cowardly behavior. However, because of the potential for harm to Hunter’s children, through teasing at school by kids that come here, I really did not see any need for this nonsense to continue on and on for months.
I will admit that I might have inflamed the situation with comments like, “I think we have to remember that sure Taylor exercises poor judgment sometimes but is mostly a character of morals and substance, not a skank who bawls here eyes out every day like Brooke. I pity KKL for having to play such a character because she deserves better.” There were negative messages about 'Taylor' as well as Hunter. Sometimes people do not know that they are criticizing a character rather than the portrayer although I have never believed that people are that dumb. I can be wrong sometimes though and fell into the same sort of trap.
Yet that is what I was responding too there in messages mentioning ‘Taylor’ and Hunter. All of the rest was just cruel criticism aimed directly at Hunter about her lips. It became such a mind-numbingly inane topic that I regularly posted messages inviting people to move on with their lives like everyone else had months ago instead of being left behind. In early 2006 when this was published, the hysteria seems to have died down a lot thankfully. If Hunter has any more work done though the plastic surgery critics will crawl out from under their pathetic rocks again to bore us all silly for a while.
I just hope that none of that happens again because I believe that we should all grow old gracefully but it is every individual’s right to get plastic surgery just as it is to get a tattoo for example. Will plastic surgery and being single help Hunter in 2006 onwards? It could be a new beginning for her given that she has a few days off from work each week. That gives her time to pursue small parts in movies or prime time television when she is not working on the public speaking circuit. It could also help her to reinvigorate her desire to suceed in the business world and help people through her charity which is all on hold currently. The world is still Hunter's oyster so it will be interesting to watch.
